My training in working with adults is based in psychodynamic therapy in which we may look at unresolved issues and feelings from your past and how they are impacting your current functioning in relationships with others. We may also examine the dynamic ongoing between therapist and client to see what we can learn about your ways of relating to others and what ways are working as well as what ways may be holding you back.
I also am trained in treatment approaches focused more on the here and now. These include cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness/acceptance commitment therapy(ACT), and solutions focused therapy. To simplify and summarize, cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on the common thoughts and feelings you have about yourself and helps you reality test whether those thoughts and feelings are causing disruption to your daily functioning. ACT focuses on learning to accept feelings and make room for them through relaxation and centering exercises while helping you move forward on your goals. Solution focused therapy puts emphasis on what is working in your life and how to build on it.
